Larry D. Williams, Lampasas County exotic game rancher in retirement, died suddenly at home on October 21, with his loving wife Julie by his side. Larry was born on May 12, 1947, in Weston, Ohio, to Cameron and Ethel (Porter) Williams. He graduated from Worthington Ohio High School in 1965. During his time in high school, he played lacrosse and lettered in both football and wrestling. He then attended Ohio State University, majoring in wildlife and parks management. Larry was a decorated US Army veteran, and in 1968 he volunteered for the US Army Intelligence and volunteered to serve in Vietnam, serving with the 2nd Field Force and then the National Security Agency. The description "Larger than Life" was often used in reference to him. He was a force to be reckoned with. He loved to entertain others, to see them have a good time, and loved to help others get ahead. Larry was a devoted, loving, generous, and providing husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a true Christian and Patriot who loved nature, his family, his friends, and his country. In 1972, he began his commercial and industrial insurance career in Columbus, Ohio, with Buckeye Union. He and Julie married in 1977, transferring to Detroit, Cincinnati, Chicago and Cleveland before returning back to Columbus as a Division Vice President SA, CEO and President of the Great Land Group. In 2005, they purchased the High Mesa Ranch in Lampasas County and moved there permanently in 2011. As he often said, "to become Texans by intelligent choice." On July 18, 2011, the Texas State House of Representatives, via proclamation for his accomplishments and contributions to Texas, made him a Lifetime Texan. He and Julie met via SCUBA diving. Together they dove the Great Lakes, Canada, Maine, the North Atlantic, the Carolinas, Rhode Island, the Caribbean, Florida, Italy, Greece, Spain, California, and Australia's Great Barrier Reef, with their kids who were also certified divers. A Pontiac enthusiast, hot rodder and drag racer, water and snow skier, they trekked to Canada, hunted in Africa with gold, silver, and bronze world record book big game entries. Larry was a past president of Headhunters Fraternity and Grand Slam Foundation; he was a member of the Safari Club, Exotic Wildlife, and Texas Wildlife Association. They loved overnight horse packing in the Rockies and West Texas. Larry was active in Lampasas Global Methodist Church, a longtime BSA Coordinator and Charter Organization Representative for Pack 100 and Troop 200; he was a Master Mason, past board member of the Cleveland Zoo, Ohio Fair Plan and Ohio Insurance Institute. Larry supported Julie as the former Christian After School Program (CAPS) Director, and later as Chairwoman of the Providence Christian Academy school board. He drove the CAPS pickup van, assisted with crafts, helped in the kitchen and emptied garbage cans often commenting "Julie says far more important duties than any military or executive assignment I ever had." He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Claudia. Larry is survived by his wife, Julie; his son, Larry Jr., and wife Stephanie of Houston; his daughters, Christine Maxcy and husband Matthew of Marble Falls, and Jacquelyn Porter and husband Lt. Col. Philip of Virginia; his grandchildren, Eileen and Lydia Maxcy, and Catherine and William Porter; his brothers, Cameron Lee (Suzanne), Philip C. (Cathy) and numerous other loving family members.
