CLINTON LEE NICELY (1953- 1981) The following obit for Clinton appeared in the October 29, 1981Journal: A memorial service was held for Lt. Clinton Lee Nicely by the United States Navy at the US Naval Air Station, Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida, October 16th. Lt. Nicely , the youngest son of the late Charles L and C Rebecca Nicely was born in Leesville, Louisiana, grew up in Worthing, Ohio. He was a varsity baseball player there and graduated from high school in 1972. He attended Ohio State University on a baseball scholarship and played for four years until he graduated in 1976. Lt. Nicely entered the Navy in August 1976 and was commissioned an Ensign on December 10 of 1976. Following completion of flight training, he reported to VA-174 in December 1977 and completed RAG training in October 1978 and participated in a Mediterranean cruise aboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower in July 1979. From April 1980 to December 1980, Lt. Nicely deployed with VA-12 for a record-breaking cruise to the Indian Ocean aboard the Dwight D Eisenhower. He was promoted to Lt. in January 1981. Lt. Nicely's decorations include the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Sea Service Ribbon, and the Expert Pistol Ribbon. He died in a plane crash Sept. 5 in the North Atlantic. He is survived by his wife, his grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Harry L Nicely of Middleway and Mrs. Margaret LeMaster of Charles Town and one brother.
